PSALM 110 19 APRIL 2008

King & Priest

This is both a royal & Messianic psalm making total reference to the rule & conquest of the Messiah. David certainly was not pointing to any human or earthly king since there was never a Jewish king who was a priest, not to mention a ‘priest forever’ v4. There were also no known earthly kings who have conquered the world as mentioned in v 6.

In this psalm, we see Jesus exalted by the Father as King v1-3 & victorious in His conquest of all other kings v5-7. This King is special, He is Priest forever, making His throne truly a throne of grace for the people & the nations.

Application:
Often, we identify with God more like He is our Priest, interceding & mediating for us. As the King of kings, we need to see ourselves subject to His rule & obey Him in His commands. Failing to obey makes us disloyal & the enemies of the King. Are there any areas in your life that remains un-submitted to God? Submit to Him & find His grace for that situation.

Train Your Spirit to Pray

This psalm was likely penned before David was king & when his enemies were king Saul and his officials. David seemed to have come to the end of himself in dealing with his enemies here.

Although his enemies have told lies about him, hated him, fought against him without cause, he still tried to love them v4-6. When attempt to win over his enemies failed, David submitted the matter to God, “In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.” Psalm 109:4

David prayed to God for nature to take it’s course: since his enemies were merciless in their dealings with him, hence, may the Lord’s judgement be over them v6-20, 27-29. David then prayed for himself for the Lord’s healing & deliverance for him in his suffering and weakened state due to the attacks from his enemies v21-26, 30-31.

“See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; Everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit” 1 Thess 5:15-19

Application:
Be a man or a woman of prayer today. True strength and faith is borne in our spirit nursed by the Holy Spirit in our prayer life.

Trust God

Psalm 108:1-5 was extracted from Psalm 57:7-11 and Psalm 108:6-13 from Psalm 60:5-12. The authorship of this psalm is credited to David since he penned both Psalm 57 & 60. In this instance, the worship leader did a re-mix. He cut & paste and created a new psalm.

Psalm 108 opens with praise to the Lord v1-5 followed by God’s response from His Sanctuary v6-9 and a prayer seeking God’s Presence to go forth with them into battle wherein if God is with them, victory is assured v10-13.

Once again, David puts his confidence in God. “I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.” Psalm 108:3-5

Application:
Are you confident in the Lord today? Start your day praising the Lord & as you praise Him, let your confidence in His victory & help rise up in your spirit.

Trouble, Thanksgiving & His Love

There are 4 cycles of troubles described in this psalm. Each time the people cry out to God in their trouble v6, 13, 19 & 28, God saves them and the people are thankful v8, 15, 21-22, 31-33.

The psalmist records 4 different troubles in this psalm:

(i) Basic needs not met, no water & food v4-7, 9
(ii) Bondage & enslaved eg in our attitudes and spirit such as depression v10-14
(iii) Afflictions & sicknesses due to sin, foolishness and rebellious ways v17-20
(iv) Dangerous situations v23-30

The Lord could have treated us as we deserved and count it as our dues when calamity befalls us. Some troubles are indeed our own doing v11, 17. Yet, through all our troubles, we can thank Him & testify that His love for us is truly great! “Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the LORD.” Psalm 107:43

Application:
Often we pray for God to save us or relief us from pain. Pray instead that we will encounter God’s love & be satisfied with Him. Don’t stop short of just being glad the pain or trial is over. The wise are able to see beyond the situation or trial to see a Hand of eternal love reaching out for yours. Reach for Him today!

Yes, I am Praising God!

While Psalm 105 focuses on the covenant God has with His people, Psalm 106 recalls the failings of the Israelites. We can learn from these failures and avoid the mistakes made by Israel.

Time & again the Israelites sinned against the Lord in rebellion towards God & Moses v7, 14, 16, 32-33, idolatry v19, 28, 35-39 and faithlessness v25. And that was all in the backdrop of tremendous miracles, provision & victory of God. One major problem the Israelites and for that matter, the modern day people like us are prone to do, is to forget His goodness & blessings, v7, 13, 21-22.

Often it’s in our forgetfulness or taking God for granted that would lead to rebellious deeds. Hence, Psalms 103, 104 & 105 are duly apt to teach us to praise God. For we guard our hearts from sin & rebelliousness when we remember God’s faithfulness & blessings and guard our spirits by praising Him! “Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD or fully declare his praise?” Ps 106:1-2

Application:
Take 10 minutes to praise the Lord today. Remember His goodness to you & be assured that you need to only wait patiently for Him to come through for you in your trials.

So blessed! We Have A Covenant Keeping God

This psalm was probably written after the Babylonian exile by a Levite returning to Judah with the remnant. The recall of history serves as a reminder of god’s faithfulness.

In his recount, the psalmist recalls God’s covenant with Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, v8-11. God fulfilled His covenant to the nation of Israel when He raised a nation up in Egypt & then delivered them from slavery, v12-41 then led the Israelites into the Promised land, v42-45.

Indeed, when we see His faithfulness, we have every reason to sing and praise the Lord! “Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles,” Psalm 105:1-5a

Application:
Recall God’s acts of faithfulness in your life or some testimonies that awes you. Renew your trust in Him, He is faithful to His promises not just in the past, but today too.

So Blessed! Grateful for the Breath of Life

While the psalmist did not follow strictly the creation order of Genesis 1, he certainly had the Creation scene in his mind when he wrote this psalm. We see the psalmist mention the various aspects of creation: light v2, separation of the waters v2-4, separation of land & water and provision of water v5-13, provision of vegetation v14-17, the sun & moon v19-23, land & sea creatures v18, 24-26.

The created awaits the Creator to sustain them. “These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time.” Psalm 104:27 Whether it is through food or the breath of life v27-30, God sustains His creation. The psalmist ends off by saying that he can sing & praise the Lord as long as he is alive v31-35. “I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD.” Psalm 104:33-34

Application:
The Lord has blessed us with much physically: life, breath, health, food, a liveable and comfortable environment. Take time to bless the Lord for blessing you with so much! Oftentimes we take all our physical blessings for granted. Today, take time to thank God for your parents, the roof over your head, school, teachers, classmates, leaders, the clothes you have, the shoes you have and so on. If Nick Vujicic could bless the Lord even though he has been born without limbs, most of us here with limbs should have more to be thankful & less to complain about in our lives.

So Blessed! Grateful for His Love

There are no requests made in this psalm, just a simple appeal to God’s people not to forget the blessings of God, v2. The psalmist is simply grateful to God for all His blessings. Listed from v3-5 are 6 blessings: forgiveness, healing, redemption, lovingkindness, compassion & renewal.

The psalmist is also grateful to God for His dealings with us, v6-18:

(i) Righteousness & justice for the oppressed, v6

(ii) Reveals His ways to those close to Him & His acts to His people, v7

(iii) Slow to anger & full of lovingkindness, v8

(iv) Does not stay angry forever, v9

(v) Does not punish us to the extent that we deserve, v10

(vi) His love is so vast it’s compared to the depth of heavens to the earth, v11

(vii) His forgiveness of our sin is so wide, covering the gap between the east & west, v12
(viii) His compassion is compared to that of a father to a child, v13

(ix) His blessings are for those who stay faithful to Him, v17-18

(x) He knows we are weak and inadequate of scoring points with Him based on our own merits or goodness, v14-16.

This psalm closes with a call to the faithful to carry on blessing the Lord, v19-22. May the whole universe bless the Lord.

Application:
How often we seek God’s blessing for our own lives but do we desire to bless Him as much as we want Him to bless us? Take time to bless the Lord today with all your strength like what the psalmist did. He is worthy of our blessing!

Prayer of An Afflicted Man

This psalm was likely written long after the destruction of Jerusalem, v8, 14, 16 and around the time where Judah would be restored after the 70 year captivity, v13.

During the captivity, life was difficult in the land of Judah. The psalmist described his plight with images associated with loss of appetite v4, food tasting like ashes & drink like tears v9, he was skin & bones v5, he compared himself to unclean birds who are outcast & lived alone v6, sleepless & lonely v7, his name was cursed by enemies in the land v8 & he was thrown away like trash v10.

The psalmist then looks to the promise of God v12-13. “You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come.” Psalm 102:13

He trusts that although Judah & Jerusalem may be experiencing shame, nations will one day praise God again v15-16, 21 for indeed we serve a God of compassion v13-14, 17-20.

Application:
We all have our own set of trials & struggles. Have you lost appetite & taste for food & are struggling in relationships? God allows you to go through unpleasant journeys & will have compassion on you. Restoration is in the pipeline when you look to Him.

Psalms 103-106 are all praises to God. Psalm 103 blesses God for His love for His people, Psalm 104 for God’s care of His creation, Psalm 105 for His faithfulness to His covenant to Abraham and Psalm 106 for His journey with a rebellious people.

Spiritual Leadership 101

This psalm was likely written early in the rule of king David. “when will you come to me” v2 alludes to the fact that the Ark of God has not yet been returned to Jerusalem.

In this psalm, David spells out the essentials of spiritual leadership:

(i) Devotion to God, v1-2: Here we see David longing for the Presence (Ark) of the Lord.

(ii) Discernment of evil & those who are blameless, v3-7. In fact, David chooses to associate with those whose walk is right.

David hangs out with the faithful & blameless. Those who are perverse, arrogant & deceiving, he cuts them off from his leadership team, even his city.

Application:
Leadership is influence. Besides you influencing the rest of the pre-believing friends & family around you, we need to be aware too of what influences us. Are you exposed to good or negative influences in your school or office? Cut off the negative influence today.

Psalm 100 9 APRIL 2008

For the Lord is Good

This is the final psalm exalting the reign of God.

The people take delight in God, v1-2, know that they belong to Him, v3 and worship meaningfully in the temple, v4. The people could do so with ease as they can conclude that they have a good and loving God, v5.

Application:
Most of us have tasted the goodness of God. Take time to worship & give thanks to Him today! Count all your blessings and acknowledge His goodness towards you!

God’s Throne

Psalm 93, 97 and 99 all open with “The Lord reigns”. God’s reign is not limited only to the lives of the believers but His reign is for the whole earth. There are 3 aspects of the Throne of God:

i) God’s Throne is above the nations, v1-3

ii) God’s Throne is a Throne of Justice, v4

iii) God’s Throne is a Throne of Grace, v6-8
We serve a God who forgives and disciplines His people, “O LORD our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds.” Psalm 99:8 (NIV)

Approach the King on His terms! He is holy, v3, 5, 9. “...Be holy, for I am holy...” Lev 11:44

Application:
The royal psalms talks about the reign of God. Is He is the reigning King in your life? Are you living a life of holiness? Any other kind of lifestyle is not acceptable to our Holy God and King of kings!

The Judge Arrives

Psalm 96 & Psalm 98 share several similarities. On an interesting note, Psalm 96:11-13 & Psalm 98:7-9 speaks of a Judge that finally shows up! One of the major laments of many psalmists is that the wicked prosper and seem to get away with their evil ploys as if there were no justice due.

Finally, after a wait, the Lord appears. He is the Bridegroom & the church is His Bride. He will return to receive His Bride some day. When He comes, He will also judge the world. Those who live conscience clear can truly sing and worship while they look forward to the 2nd coming of Jesus.

Application:
If you are facing some form of injustice, be assured that God is in the know and He will arrive!

He is Exalted

Psalm 97 is a call to worship God to both groups of people: the believers / Israel & the whole earth.

The psalmist beckons the whole earth to worship God, v1-7 and saints to rejoice in Him, v8-12.

People who do not know Him would stand amaze at the display of His power, “The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory.” Psalm 97:6 (NIV)

As for those who belong to Him, when we see His Name exalted, we rejoice, “Zion hears and rejoices and the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments, O LORD. For you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.” Psalm 97:8-9 (NIV)

Application:
Pray that the Lord’s name would be exalted in your spiritual family and among prebelieving friends & family members today.

Worship God all the Earth

While Psalm 95 is a call to God’s people to worship Him, Psalm 96 is a call to the whole earth to worship Him. There are 4 key words in our worship of God (extracted from Warren Wiersbe’s “Be Exultant”) :

i) Sing to the Lord a new song, v1

ii) Praise the Lord! He is great and greatly to be praised, v4

iii) Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, v9

iv) Rejoice – the Lord is coming back, v11-13

Application:
Imagine the day when the whole earth sings, praise, worship & rejoice in Christ! The newspaper headlines credits Jesus for reconciliation & end of wars, bird flu, cancer and AIDS patients are cured, marriages are strong and so on! The hearts of the people are grateful to the Saviour.

Let’s pray that this can become a reality and that God will be worshipped in all the earth.

As His children, we start today in some part of earth, to give to God our songs, praises, worship & rejoicing!

God is Great!

This psalm is a call to believers / Israel to worship God.

V1-3 calls us to sing to the Lord, shout joyfully, give thanks. Such exuberance and joy wells up when we can confess, “For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.” Psalm 95:3 (NIV)

The time of exuberance moves next into a time of reverence and bowing before Him, “for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” Psalm 95:7a (NIV)

In the time of worship, the psalm affirms that we will hear His voice speaking, only do not be harden to what God has to say, v7b-11.

It’s only when we choose to listen & obey, is the worship of our lives, truly reflective of the worship of our lips and worthy of our great God.

Application:
We worship a great God. How great is your worship to Him? Consistent in walk and talk or is it dependent on how you feel? Focus on His greatness and not your feelings today when you enter His Presence and worship Him.

Facing Injustices

This psalm was likely penned during the rule of the wicked king Manesseh, 2 Kings 21, before the fall of Jerusalem. Instead of being whiney and grumbling incessantly when faced with injustices, the righteous can make 4 responses (points extracted from Warren Wiersbe’s “Be Exultant”)

i) Pray for justice, v1-7

ii) Warn the wicked of their danger, v8-11

iii) Accept God’s discipline, v12-15

iv) Rely on God’s help, v16-23

Application:
What is my typical response to unfairness? To complain & grumble? Choose to respond in a way God desires. Which of the above 4 responses would you like to grow in most at this point in time?

Psalm 93 2 APRIL 2008

Psalm 93, Psalm 95-100 are a series of royal psalms exalting the Sovereign rule of Jehoveh the King.

The Lord Reigns

This Psalm was likely written when the remnant of Jews returned to Judah after the Babylonian captivity. Permission was given for them to return to their homeland, rebuild their temple & nation. While they were doing just that, their progress was interrupted, the builders were attacked. The leaders and the people needed encouragement & the Lord reassured them (points extracted from Warren Wiersbe’s “Be Exultant”) :

i) He reigns supremely, v1-2
ii) He is greater than our circumstances, v3-4
iii) He always keeps His Word, v5

Application:
Let the Lord reassure you today that He is able to help you at all times.

How Are You Fluorishing?

This psalm opens with praise & worship to God, v1-5. The wicked are then compared to grass – flourishing but without permanence, v7. The righteous are compared to the palm tree – flourishing and planted securely in the House of God, bearing fruit & remaining full of life even in old age, v12-14.

Application:
How are you flourishing today? Are you flourishing in the Lord or are you flourishing in the world, caught up with demands of career, socialising and so on?

Pray that the Lord give you wisdom to see where you would want to excel in today. Please Him above all so that He will bless you with permanence beyond temporal achievements.

Psalm 91 31 MARCH 2008

Our Divine Covering

This Psalm talks about the special covering of God’s people. They enjoy His protection, v2-13. He delivers & protects His people from traps, attacks, sicknesses, plagues. He even sends His angels to guard & help you.

This covering is conditional. We need to remain in Him. “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1 (NIV)

The Lord says this when we remain in Him: "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation." Psalm 91:14-16 (NIV)

Application:
For some of us, we are enjoying membership privileges. If you are sick or being attacked by problems or are feeling low, know that God protects & delivers you. What is an area that you can trust the Lord in today for His covering?

For others, check... Is God your protection & covering or have you stepped outside that by choosing your own ways? (Eg skip church or cell, secret sins etc) Come back to obeying Him today!

Lessons of Life

This psalm deals with our regard of life: today we have the breath of life and soon, we are no more, v3-6. Moses then goes on to mention the sin of Israel, possibly referring to the moment where they turned faithless at Kadesh Barnea (Numbers chapter 13 &14) and God’s wrath, v7-11.

Moses’ response to the numerous lessons of life :

(i) When we consider that life is short, pray, “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

(ii) When we face difficult times, pray, “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” Psalm 90:14
(iii) When our works seem fruitless, pray, “establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands.” Psalm 90:17b

Which one of the above 3 prayers speaks to you today? Pray that He will teach you wisdom, satisfy you &

When God Covenants

This psalm starts off as a psalm of praise & ends off as a psalm of lament. The Psalmist rejoices over God’s covenant with David, v3-4 and sorrows over how the later generations did not remain faithful to God, v39.

Still, in the face of unfaithfulness, God affirms that He keeps His covenant and will establish the throne of David, v33-37. This fulfilment is found in Christ, who is the King of kings. “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

Application:
God fulfilled this promise to His people over time and generations. Trust in Him. He may take awhile sometimes, but if you are patient, you will see the wonderful work that He will do!

So Dark

This Psalm is not like the rest where writers would have started out dismayed but ended off their writing with a note of hope.

All through, we read about death & darkness v3-6, 10-12, 15, rejection from men v8, 18, sorrow v9, rejection from god v14, drowning v16-17.

At the lowest point in his life, we learn 4 steps of handling dark days (extracted from Warren Wiersebe’s ‘Be Worshipful’):

i) Go to the Lord by faith v1-2
ii) Tell the Lord how you feel v3-9, 15-18
iii) Defend your cause before the Lord v10-12
iv) Pray again v13-14

Application:
Take the first step of going to the Lord today for yourself or someone you know that is going through a difficult time.

The Holy City

This Psalm speaks of God’s love for Zion, the holy city, v1-3 and the joy of the many nationalities that is birthed and residing there, v4-7.

The Psalm must be read in two levels:

i) It is a prophecy that nations will gather and worship in Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:1-5)

ii) It is reflective of the heavenly Zion where we have our spiritual citizenship.

Application:
Pray for God to bless Jerusalem with peace.

Call on Him Confidently

Once again, David’s in need of God’s help, v14. He prays confidently in this Psalm. The reasons for his confidence stems from knowing that

i) He is the servant of God and he trusts in His Master, v2b, 16

ii) He can count on God, v5-8

iii) God is great, v9-10

Applications:
Like David, you can pray confidently to overcome the difficult situations in your life. Pray in confidence in Him, now!

New Beginnings

This Psalm was written after 70 years of exile in Babylon. The people start to experience the favour of God, v1-3. Pray for a renewed walk with Him, v4-7 and recall lessons learnt in their fall, v8-13.

George H. Morrison said “The victorious Christian life is a series of new beginnings.” Do not stay in the fallen state, arise once more!

Applications:
Are there areas that you need God to bless you with new beginnings again? Trust Him. He is a God of restoration.

Longing for God

This psalm was written by a man who for some reason, could not go to Jerusalem to worship God. As he contemplates the temple, we sense his longing for the Presence of God, v2-4. He then recalls the travel up to Jerusalem. The road up has its struggles, v5-6, but because of the desire to be in God’s house & the strength of God, all will make it and enter His Presence.

“They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.” v7 (NIV)

Application:
How has your time with the Lord been? Do you pause & allow your spirit to yearn for the Lord more than your projects, deadlines, to-do lists, tests, exams, meetings with friends etc? Long for Him today above all else that crowds your life.

Psalm 83 23 MARCH 2008

Enemies United

Things could not have looked worse for Israel. Besides being faced with numerous enemies, this Psalm describes a coalition of 10 enemy nations, coming together against Israel, v5.

Asaph prayed for the defeat of Israel’s enemies and in their defeat, may they acknowledge God as the Most High over all the earth, v9-18.

Application:
Have you found yourself in the situation where others gang up against you? Ask God to help you to set the record straight, so that His Name will be exalted.

God judge the judges

The “gods” (NIV) or “rulers” (NASB) refers to God’s people in a position of influence. Since we are His people, we represent Him on earth & it’s the Lord’s desire that we are just, kind & obey Him.

The judges described here did not judge justly v2, nor were they merciful v3-4 and they walked in defiance to God’s will v5.

Asaph prayed that God will act & be the Judge above all our affairs.

Application:
Some of us might think, this applies only to leaders or adults. Right & wrong. This Psalm applies to all! We all have some form of influence in our lives: Influence over our maids, friends, classmates or perhaps you are a leader in your class, cell etc. How are you pleasing the Great Judge in the way we treat others?

This psalm was likely penned during a Passover celebration cum Feast of the Tabernacle. The experience of deliverance from Egypt, v6-10 and the tragedy of a nation lost, v11-12, were recalled.

"IF my people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways,” v13 (NIV)
Victory & blessings are promised, “IF My people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow My ways, how quickly would I subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes!” v14, 16 (NIV)

“IF” speaks of God’s terms. God desires that we listen & obey.

Asaph prayed this Psalm after the Northern Kingdom was conquered by the Assyrians (722-21 BC)

The people have sinned against the Lord where once upon a time, they enjoyed tremendous blessings & favour from a fruitful vine, v8-11. Now, God’s face is turned away & the enemy ruled over them, v4-6.

Three times Asaph prayed, “Restore us, O Lord God Almighty; make Your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.” v3, 7, 19

Application:
Have you allowed sin to creep into your life & are now finding a distance in your walk with God?

Repent & pray as Asaph did.

Sin, Consequences & Cry for Mercy

The pagan nations are triumphant. God’s people are captives and the city and temple are in ruins, v1-4.

God is angry. The kingdom of Judah declined and their forefathers have fallen away from God, v5-8a. The sins accumulated to an extent that God could hold back His wrath no longer.

The psalmist takes the position of the intercessor and pleads for God’s compassion, “may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.” v8b.

Application:
God is love. He cares for His people and His chosen nation. But repeated rebellion and wilful sin will lead to consequences.

Are you holding on to some stubborn sins that seem too hard to let go? Plea for the mercy of God to forgive you & grant to you a new beginning.

Teaching the Next Generation

The psalmist warned the people not to imitate their faithless ancestors as he reviewed the history, v1-4.

God desires that the fathers teach their children, v1-8 and not to turn away like the Ephriamites & even the Israelites of old, when God rescued them from Egypt, v9-11. Despite seeing countless miracles of how God delivered them, Israel forgot what God did for them in rescuing them out of Egypt, v12-53 and were unfaithful to God by turning to idols even in the Promised land, v54-64.

Oftentimes, the failures of the people are the failures of the shepherd. Then the Lord found a good shepherd, “He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” Psalm 78:70-72
Application:
David is a man with integrity of heart. He does not lie nor live a double life. How are you doing in the area of integrity? Would you tell a white lie now & then? Your moral failure has great consequences on whether the next generation is stronger or weaker in their walk with God! Choose to be true to Him today!

PSALM 70 10 MARCH 2008

Those who put their trust in God will receive help and deliverance.

“But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation
always say, “Let God be exalted!” Ps 70:4

This psalm is copied almost word for word from Psalm 40:13-17. Thus this Psalm is also a psalm of “remembrance”, to remember God of his mercy and promises.
David is properly facing a similar situations and is reminding himself of the prayers he had made before.

He pleaded and called to God to send help to him quickly, verse 1,5.
He called upon God to shame his enemies, verse 2,3.

There is joy in God’s deliverance for those who trust in Him, verse 4. There is no better help than the help of God. We should look to God for help when in need. Remember who your God is, He is the God that delivers you.

Application:
Those who place their trust in the faithfulness of God will surely be delivered. Are you in a situation where you are helpless now? Where you need God to do something right now? Do you call upon God like David did and ask Him to come quickly to help and to deliver?
Whatever pressing situation you might be in now, turn to the Sovereign God for his saving grace to come.
Cry out to him with desperation, plead of him the way David pleaded and let Him come to your rescue and deliverance.

PSALM 69 9 MARCH 2008

Believe in God who keeps His promises with you.

“The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.” Ps 69:33

David pleaded for God to have mercy and asked God to save him. He was in affliction – troubles or hardship.
He begs God to relieve him from it. We can read about his plight and his desperation for help and relief from verses 1-21.
The judgement of God was being prophesized on those who rejected God. They will not receive his salvation. (V22-29)
David, the Psalmist concludes with joy and praise, in the assurance of God’s help and deliverance from verse 30-33. He knows that his prayers to God will be heard and he has the assurance that God will come to his rescue.
Verse 34-36 is a call to praise God, He will restore Judah and the assure the people of their inheritance in the promised land.

Application:
Are you able to praise God out of the assurance that God will come to you when facing hardship? Often, our confident in God is in what we see. It is not out of faith that we trust in Him. David is able to praise God while going through tough times because he knows that God will save him and grant to him salvation. His hope is in God. You too, can praise God because of who He is not because of what you have seen. DO IT NOW! By committing all your concerns and difficulties to God . Choose to praise Him because you can trust in Him and in His power.

PSALM 68 8 MARCH 2008

A glorious and triumphant praise Song, a song of Victory.

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
who daily bears our burdens.” Ps 68:19

This is a psalm to remind us that there is victory in the Lord. This is the last to the series of 4 from Psalm 65 to praise God for his goodness to his people.
Verse 1-18 recounted the numerous victories of God. It tells us about God and what He has done for the people. He is a great God who rules by his name, a gracious God of mercy and compassion who uses his power to relief the troubled and a righteous God who reliefs and delivers the oppressed. It also reminded us of how God led his people from Egypt to the promise land. (V7-10) Through it, God performed many miracles to save the people.
Finally, from verse 19 -31, it was about His Triumphant procession, where God’s temple and kingdom is being established in Israel. It is one of the most victorious and glorious moment. Now that you had understood the background of this psalm, are you able to praise God the way the Psalmist do?

Application:
If God could carry the people through such adversities over and over again till final victory, He could easily carry you and see you through all difficulties. If there are any burdens you are carrying now, turn to God and let Him carries it for you. Give thanks to Him and declare his power as in verse 35.

Praise God for His blessings and favours upon us.

“God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear him.” Ps 67:7

Psalm 67 is the 3rd of the four praise songs from Ps 65 – 68.
This is a song declaring God’s mercy to us where he bless us and cause his face to shine upon us. This chapter begins with a prayer in verse 1& 2, Prayer to God for his blessings and favour. Others who see His blessings and favours upon his people will come to the knowledge of God.

Verse 3-5 The people of God will praise Him for his abundant blessings. And Nations will join in praising God. When God blesses His people, the blessings are evident to all. It can be seen. As in verse 6-7, the effect of God’s blessing is that the land will yield it’s harvest.
There is prosperity when God bless. This is not the works of man but the divine blessing of God. Only God can bring about such great and awesome blessings. We will fear the Lord because we have been blessed by Him and we know He is God. We fear him because we do not want to come out of his blessings for us.

Application:
This is the third day since reading Psalm 65 that we learnt about praising God. Indeed, there is so much for us to praise God. Let’s take a few minutes to praise God for his blessings and favours today. The more you praise Him the more you will enter into his abundant blessings where prosperity and favours will bestow upon you.

Praise God for Answered prayers!

“Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.” Ps 66:16

This is a thanksgiving Psalm. The Psalmist calls upon all people to praise God here. We could praise God because of who He is. His deeds are awesome and His power is great. He recalled the deliverance of God at the Red Sea as a sign of His mighty saving power. This is recorded in Verse 5-7, where the Lord turned the sea into dry land and led his people to pass through the waters on foot. He is a powerful God.
He continued to praise God in verse 8 -12. Here the psalmist praises God for His protection and for saving his people.
From verse 13, the author enters into personal praise and worship of God after he has called all to praise God. He proclaims of what God has done in verse 16-20.
The psalmist has experience God’s power and blessing in his life. He has been blessed by the mercy of God and is able to tell others about how good God is and what God has done for him.

Application:
How about you? Have you ever turned to God in times of distress and trouble and see God’s deliverance, provision and protection? You too can testify of God’s goodness and power. God will answer to our prayers for help. He is a powerful God. Think about God’s power and who he is. Take a moment to praise Him for his mighty power. Praise Him for all His answered prayers for you. Go and tell someone of how God has answered you.

Let’s Praise God For His Power & Goodness

“Praise Awaits you, O God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled. Psalms 116:18

Psalm 65 is a praise song and it is the beginning of 4 Psalms of Praise. It is a song of praise of God’s greatness to His people.

David gives God glory for:
Hearing our Prayer
Verse 2
Pardoning our Sin
Verse 3
Satisfying our Souls
Verse 4
Protecting us
Verse 5
Giving Strength

Forming the mountains

In other words, verse 2 -4 tell us that God has saved us and redeemed us. Verse 5-7 summarizes for us that God is powerful.
And Verse 9-13 show us that God gives us plenty of good things.

Application:
Ask God to grant you a thankful spirit to praise the Lord. Take a few minutes to praise God.
· Thank God for His salvation. He has pardon your sins and you can enjoy an intimate relationship with God the father.
· Praise God for He is powerful. He is the master of the universe.
· Give thanks for God’s provision, both past and future.

From Despair to Confidence

In this Psalm, Asaph describes how he moved from despair to confidence knowing that the Lord cares for His people.

Asaph began by praying what troubled him, v1-6, and wondering in his pain if God has left him, v7-9. He reached out his hands and cried out to God, yet could not find the comfort for his heart, v10.

Things took a turn when he decided to shake himself out of his own sorrows, v11-12 by meditating on God’s mighty act of deliverance, where He rescued the Israelites enslaved by the Egyptians, v13-20.

Finally, he realized afresh that the Lord was the Shepherd of Israel, v 20 whom he could trust to work out everything for good.

Application:Are there terrible events happening that causes us despair and disappointment? Will yourself to look up in faith and look back at what God has brought you through. God will work all things out well for you as you put your trust in Him.

Back to Basics

The background of this psalm is probably God’s judgement on the Assyrian army’s attempted invasion of Judah as recorded in Isaiah 37-38 and 2 Kings 18-19 during the reign of King Hezekiah. Through the spectacular victory over the Assyrians, Asaph shares with us four basic truths about our Jehovah God.

1. God wants us to know Him, v1-3: The people of Judah knew of God’s greatness. When the Assyrian army threatened to attack Jerusalem, the angel of the Lord visited the camp and wiped out 185,000 soldiers.
2. God wants us to trust Him, v4-6: Despite the difficult challenges that King Hezekiah and his prophets faced, they chose to put their faith in God and His Word.
3. God wants us to fear Him, v7-9: When the wrath of God came, the siege over the Assyrian army was over within seconds. God is not only a God of love, but also a consuming fire.
4. God wants us obey Him, v10-12: Having seen the victory that the Lord had given Judah, nations around should be motivated to come and worship the Lord.

Application:
Which of these four basic truths do you struggle with? Come back to the Lord today and renew your covenant before Him.

Psalm 75 15 MARCH 2008

Humble yourself in worship

When we worship, we thank God for what He has done. True worship centres on God. Not the feel good kind of feeling for ourselves. Asaph started worship with praising God for who He is, v1!

The wicked were warned about their boasting and arrogance because there is a God who judges the wicked, v2-8.

“As for me, i will declare this forever”, v9 indicates a decision made on the part of Asaph to worship & trust in God for the cutting off of the wicked and the lifting up of the righteous.

Application:
What does worship mean to you? Worship is all about God. Do you have difficulty humbling your heart before God? Ask God to help you worship Him with all your heart, mind and soul today.

Psalm 74 14 MARCH 2008

God forgets NOT His covenant

Psalm 74 focuses on the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians.

God seemed to have rejected His chosen people! Why else did God permit a pagan nation to defeat the Jews and destroy their holy city and sacred temple, v1-11?

Asaph chose to remember the works of God in the past, v12-17.

The nation had been defeated and the sacred temple destroyed. But the nation of Israel still has God as their God. God’s covenant had not changed, v18-23.

Application:
In difficult moments, sometimes we get so overwhelmed by negative thoughts that we can forget the goodness of God.

Are you going through tough stages of your life right now?
Pause. Take a moment and start to recollect from the beginning the goodness of God in your life e.g. how you received Christ, how you did well in school for your worst subject…etc

Psalm 73 13 MARCH 2008

Can I have the answer please.. God

Doubts crept in when Asaph saw with his eyes of flesh. Is God fair?

Why are the bad people prospering, v4-14? Have I wasted my efforts keeping my heart pure and doing the right things, v13?

Asaph did not stop at questioning God. He went before God to ask God and God revealed the answers to him.

Don’t envy the ungodly and those who live in sin. What seem pleasurable are fantasies that will fade away in time, v18-20. Worldly success and prosperity is transient.

Application:
Have doubts crept in? Is God good? Does He really love me? Then why doesn’t He answer my prayers?

Don’t stop at the questions. Ask Him for answers! Come before God today and present that doubt/question to Him. Ask Him to reveal the answer to you in a manner you best understand.
Make God your refuge.

PSALM 72 12 MARCH 2008

Who is the King of Glory?

“All kings will bow down to him and
all nations will serve him.” Ps 72:11

Psalm 72 bring an end to book 2 of psalms. This is a prayer for Solomon, son of David, as he was about to succeed as the next king. Verse one is a prayer of the father to the son who will be his heir to the throne as the next king.
Ps 72: 2 -17 contains a prophecy about a coming kingdom. On one hand, the kingdom being referred to is Solomon’s; on the other, it is referring to the coming kingdom of Jesus Christ. Only the kingdom of Christ is an everlasting kingdom, can there be a kingdom of perfect peace. Christ’s kingdom is a kingdom through which all peoples on earth are blessed.

David’s prophesy goes beyond a prayer for his son, Solomon. It goes into a prophesy for our Messiah, Jesus Christ.
The only kingdom that will reign in righteousness and glory is the kingdom of God.

Application:

Let’s pray for our government and leaders the way David prays for Solomon – to endow the government and leaders with God’s justice and righteousness.
Pray for them that they will come to the knowledge of the saving grace of our Lord Jesus. Bless them with the righteousness of God in all decision making. Make this your daily prayer in this 40 days prayer and fast when you pray for Singapore.

PSALM 71 11 MARCH 2008

God is loving and He will never forsake the one who trust in Him.

“Since my youth, O God, you have taught me,
and to this day I declare
your marvelous deeds.” Ps 71:17

Psalm 71 is a Prayer for God’s help in old age. The Psalmist initial appealed for God’s was found in verse 1-4. As he prayed to God for help, he confessed in verses 5-8 that the Lord has always been his hope.
After he confessed of his hope in the lord, it is interesting that we can notice that he now continues to appeal to God for help in from verse 9 – 13.
Finally, verse 14 was a declaration of his hope in the Lord, that He has always had hope in God. He could praise God more and more because of this hope.
We know that the author did not speak of an “untested” goodness of God here. He could always hope in the Lord is because God had never fail to rescue him when he needs help. God has delivered him from many life threatening moments too.
With hope being renewed and faith arises, his prayers is turned into thanksgiving.

Application:
Are your heart filled with faith and hope in the Lord? God is good and faithful, He will never disappoint nor forsake those who place their trust in Him. Until you learn to trust Him, you will not experience new hope in Him. The more you trust, the more hope will arise. What is something that God wants you to trust him now? Follow his voice and place your trust in him. You can be filled with joy when there is hope always in the Lord.

God Is Your Righteous Judge

“Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him; let all the upright in heart praise him!.” Psalm 64:9

People were saying bad things about King David. The things that they said hurt David. They attack David with their tongues and words. They are like arrows and swords that pierce his hearts.
“They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their words like deadly arrows” Psalm 64:3

In a battle, Arrows and swords were used to kill their enemies. Similarly, the people’s words which David relates as “arrows” and “swords” will hurt your soul or spirit.

David prays to God for protection in verse 1-2. He places his confidence in God’s righteous judgement. God’s righteousness will prevail.

Application:
Have you ever been hurt by words of people? If you have, your soul or spirit could have been wounded. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you remember them. Release the hurts to the Lord and let Him be your righteous Judge. Do not hold grudges towards these people.

PSALM 63 3 MARCH 2008

All I Want Is You Lord!

“Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.” Psalm 63:3

This was the time when David was in the wilderness of Judah. David fled from Jerusalem and into the wilderness when his son, Absalom, took control of his kingdom,
2 Samuel 15 - 16
Although David is in the Wilderness, his heart is filled with praises and adoration to God. We can see in this chapter that there is a great sense of peace in David’s heart.
David expressed his desire of God in
Ps 63:1-2. He knows how sweet and pleasant it is to be in God.

Imagine that you have to leave your house because someone has taken over by force. You have to leave behind every good things, your property, your wealth, your comfort, etc… In times like this, you can either chose to grumble and be unhappy or
Chose to turn to God and find comfort in Him because he is your all sufficiency.

Application:
Can you identify with David’s situation of being in wilderness where you could be in a situation you least wanted?
How would you have felt? Frustrated, angry, lost, confuse, fearful etc….
Praise and give thanks to God despite being in these sticky situations. God protects you and you will be satisfied in Him. Fix your eyes on Jesus and find joy in Him.

PSALM 62 2 MARCH 2008

Put Your Trust In God At All Times

“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” Psalm 62: 8

In Psalm 62, David commits himself to the Lord when faced assaults by his son who had wanted to dethrone him.

David must be devastated yet he did not allow disappointment to rule in his heart. Instead David placed his confidence in God once again, verses 1 -4.
We can trust God at all times when we place our confident in him.

David finds strength in the Lord when he claims that God is his:
· Rock & Salvation – Vs1
· Fortress & Shelter – Vs 2
· Saftety and Hope - Vs 5

Application:
Do not look to men or material things to meet your needs. Rather look to God and place your trust in Him.
Tell God that you accept his loving kindness. Pour out your hearts to God – verse 8. Do not hide or ignored your emotions, come before God to tell him how you feel.
As you do that, invite God to be your Rock & Salvation, Fortress & Shelter and Saftety & Hope.

PSALM 61 1 MARCH 2008

God Is Your Shelter

“I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings” Psalm 61:4

David, in this Psalm, as in many others, begins with prayers and tears, but ends with songs of praise. Psalm 61 is likely to be written soon after David lost his son, Absalom. Absalom plotted against his father’s throne but his plot failed and he died - 2 Samuel 18:9-15.

Once again, David was deeply distressed and he was shaken. As he prays to God, he was being reminded of what God has been for him, a strong refuge and tower. And he began to long for God’s presence –where there is security and peace.

We can make one observation of David’s prayer to the Lord through Psalms. Quite often, the prayer would start with a depressing or down mood and as David calls onto the Lord and began to proclaim the character of God, his mood changes. Changed from outcast and dejected to being hopeful and confident in the Lord.

Application:
It is perfectly ok to acknowledge how we feel when things aren’t going well. While doing so, we should not allow ourselves to stop there. Most of the time, David did not stop at his depression or discouragement. He would go beyond the feelings of the circumstances to praise God and to declare God’s goodness. There is power in the person God. Learn to profess the character of God everyday, especially when you are facing challenges. Come under His shelter.

PSALM 60 29 FEBRUARY 2008

Final Victory Is In The Lord

“With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.” Psalm 60:12

After many Psalms that were written when David was in distress, Psalm 60 was written after David took throne as King

In this Psalm, David reflects upon the bad state of the nation for many years, Verse 1-3. He prays for the deliverance of the nation in verse 5.

Finally, David saw victories. He had numerous victories. Despite the numerous victories, David continues to pray in Hope. In the day of triumph where they defeat many nations, they see themselves in trouble because they are still at war.

David knows that unless God gave them help in the next battle, they might be defeated. Thus prays David,
“Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.”

Application:
We see the humility of David in his good days. He did not become proud or conceited even when he was wining battle after battle, not by own ability but by the power of God - From the Lord comes deliverance, Psalm 3:8.
Are you in good times or bad times? Whatever it is, do not forget the God of your victories. Speak Hope and blessing of God for the future regardless of how you might feel now.

You Can Praise God When Facing Troubles

“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” Psalm 59:16

King Saul sent a party of soldiers to David’s house in the night with an order to kill David. It must be a terrifying moment for David. Thankfully, David managed to escape with the help of his family.
1 Samuel 19:11-18 has recorded the event.

David prayed to be delivered from the enemy in verses 1-7. He is in grave danger as the enemy could often return in hope of finding him. (Verse 6) He asks God to take him away from his enemies and make him safe. He pleads to the Lord for deliverance. Once again, we see David placing his confidence in God. He is confident that God will win the fight for him, verses 8 - 13

David know full well who God is, “my strength, my fortress and my loving God” – Ps 59:9. Knowing who God is and being certain of the outcome in God, David could sing praises to God while running for his life.

Application:
We always find it hard to Praise God joyfully whenever we are in distress.
You can praise God when things go wrong.
You can do so by not focusing on what had gone wrong, but rather, focus on who God is – your strength, your fortress and your loving God. Come before Him now to receive a personal assurance from Him.

PSALM 58 27 FEBRUARY 2008

God is your Judge

Then men will say, “ Surely the righteous
still are rewarded; surely there is a God
who judges the earth.” Psalm 58:11

In this chapter, David’s prayer is to God the Supreme Judge. There is corruption of the judicial power from the days of Saul to the end of the monarchy. Even when David was enthroned as King of Israel, he still has to face troubles caused by the corrupt system.

Accusation against the wicked judges was made in verse 1-5. Their mouth, hands and hearts were filled with injustice, Ps 58:1-2.
These injustices were brought before God in prayers.

There was assurance that David has in God that He will surely judge. Psalm 58: 9-11.
Finally, when God had judged, the whole earth will see the righteousness of God rules.

Application:
Are there any unfair or unjust treatments that are receiving? Go to God to be your Judge. Leave the matter to Him. Do not use your own ways to get back your justice. Do not take revenge. Do not repay injustice with injustice. Surrender it to God.
Or have you done any injustice to people around you knowingly or unknowingly? Ask God for forgiveness. Pray to bless these people.

PSALM 57 26 FEBRUARY 2008

Fixed Your Heart To Trust God

“Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed” Psalm 57:1

David had fled and hid in the cave. This prayer was birthed out of the cave where David was hiding. From Psalms 54 – 57, David was fleeing from Saul’s attached and pursuit. 3 chapters later, David is still in the run for his life. Yet, he did not give up his hope in God. This is clearly demonstrated in Ps 57. David asked God for help in verse 1-5. He asked to be gracious and merciful. David continues to pray to God to deliverance.

Psalm 57 has two parts: verses 1-5 and verses 6-11. Both end with the words “Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth.” (Ps 57:5, 11). First part is about David’s complain of the enemy and prayers to God. Yet this is not without his assurance in God that God will help. David’s faith in God increased in second part where he praises God for his saving help.

Application:

Do Not Be Afraid

“In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?” Psalm 56:4

Psalm 56 is a prayer for help when being attached by the enemy and David’s life is threatened. Ps 56:1-2 was David’s appeal to God for help.
The background to this Psalm is the same as previous where Saul was trying to kill David.
David was afraid and we can see this in verse 3 and verse 4. Despite his fear, he chose to trust God. The more fearful David is, the more he confessed his trust in God.
Such is David’s confident in God that he offers thanksgiving and praise to God for delivering him even though he has yet to see deliverance.
David is able to do so because he knows who God is. God is a faithful, covenant keeping God. His love for his people will never fail. Can you trust God the way David trust?

Application:
Are there any fears in your heart? The things that cause you to panic are likely to be your fear. What are these fears?
Do what David did by putting your cares and burden in the Lord. Commit the outcome to God. You can trust Him.

“In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, I will not be afraid.”

You Can Cast Your Care Unto God

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
Psalm 55:22

This is another prayer for God’s Help in time of troubles. David was in great distress when he wrote this Psalm.

We can look at Psalm 55 in 3 parts:
1. Verse 1-8, David speaks of his fear of his enemy and he prays to God for his manifested favour.
2. Verse 9-15, David complains of his en enemies’ wickedness.
3. Verse 16-23, David prays that his enemy would die that they would be taken away form him. He is assured in the Lord.

Such is the confident that David has in God. He has many life’s threatening moments, yet it does not shake his faith and confidence in the Lord.
He cast his cares on the Lord because he knows that God can be trusted.

In every trial let us call upon the Lord, and he will save us. The burden of afflictions is very heavy; there is also the burden of sin and corruption. The only relief under it is, to look to Christ, who bore it.

Application:
What are your cares and burden? There are heavy and you need not carry these weights. To cast your cast upon God is to rest upon His provision and promises.
He will carry you and will strengthen your spirit by His spirit. Go to Him with your cares now! Commit your cares to the Lord in prayers.

PSALM 54 23 FEBRUARY 2008

The Lord Is Our Helper

“Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one
who sustains me.” Psalm 54:4

This is a prayer of David for deliverance from his enemies who want to have him killed. The occasion this Psalm was written was when the Ziphhites betrayed David by telling Saul his whereabouts. David

In the first part of this Psalm, verses 1-3, David complains to God about the enemy and pray to God for help.
In Ps 54:4-7, David receives assurance of God’s favour and protection. He is being comforted.

Although David is on the run for his life, and the enemy were determined to find him to destroy him, he turned to the Lord for help. He is sure that God would be on His side. He proclaims confidently that God is surely his help in verse 4. He speaks in faith that the enemy will be removed.

God is a God of covenant with His people and David knows that full well. It is with this faith in God that he promised before God that he will give thanks and praise His name after he is being delivered from his enemy’s pursuit.

Application:
Have you given thanks to God and praise Him after He has seen you through a trying or difficult time? It is the kind of thanksgivings that comes with a grateful heart that I am talking about.
Start praising Him now!

Godlessness of Man

“God looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.” Psalm 53:2

Psalm 53 is similar to Psalm 14.It’s purpose is to convince us of our sins. God show us through the psalmist how bad we are.

How can men be so bad? This is because there is no fear of God. The fool says to his heart that there is no God, verse 1. Men's bad practices flow from their bad values; if they profess to know God, yet in works & thoughts they deny him, it would mean his heart has no God. Such is a man of folly.

Psalm 53 ends with the Psalmist prayer to the Lord for the deliverance of Israel. And God shall restore their fortunes.

Is there the fear of God in your heart? Do you acknowledge the Holy God in your heart? We will sin not when we fear the Lord. Ask God to show you what is in your heart.

Application:
Pray to the Lord:
“Dear God, show me how bad I can be. All my sinfulness and wickedness is naked before you. Reveal to me my corrupt thoughts, that I may know them. ”
As you pray the above prayer, wait patiently before God. He will speak.
Allow Him to review your priorities and it’s motives.
Are these priorities of God or of the world?
Take time to re-set your life’s priorities.

Your Confidence & Security is God

“But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love
for ever and ever,” Psalm 52:8

Psalm 52 was written when David was fleeing from King Saul. David, knew that Saul was determined to destroy him, went to take refuge. On his way, he stopped at the Tabernacle and sought help from Aimelech. The news of David reaches Saul and he ordered the death of 85 priests & all the inhabitants of Nob. The account can be found in 1 Samuel 21:1-7, 22:9-23.

Psalm 52

Wickedness of a powerful enemy and it’s destruction
Verse 6 -7
The righteous would rejoice
Verse 8 -9
Confidence & Security is in God

God will destroy the wicked. Those that glory in sin, shall glory in their shame. But those whom place their trust in God will rejoice & praise Him. They will rejoice in God’s unfailing love.
If you choose to dwell in the house of God by faith and love, you shall be like green olive-trees. You will live a life of faith and holy confidence in God and his grace.

Application:
Are you hard-pressed like David? Are there any difficult people you are facing now? Vengeance is the Lord’s, the Lord is the judge. Do not repay evil for evil by going against them. Instead, turn to the Lord to bless them. You can have confidence & security in God as you remain in His presence.

Create In Me A Clean Heart

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.” Psalm 51: 17

This is a humble prayer for forgiveness and cleansing. David, being convinced of his sin, poured out his soul to God in prayer for mercy and grace.
This is a famous psalm. David wrote it after he had done something very wrong. He saw a woman, Bathsheba, bathing and wanted to have her. But she was the wife of Uriah. David sent Uriah to war to be killed by the Philistines so that he can have Bathsheba. He committed adultery and was responsible for Uriah’s death.

David was convicted of his sin against God as recorded in Psalm 51. He pleas for God’s mercy not to take over his spirit, Ps 51:11.
This pleases the Lord. What pleases God more than sacrifices is a humble heart that looks to him.

God rebuked Israel for its sin in Psalm 50. It was made clear to us the consequences of sin. Here in Psalm 51, we learn the importance of repentance and asking God for Pardon. David demonstrated to us how to pray to God for forgiveness and cleansing.

Application:
As much as God has convicted David of his sin, be silent before God to allow the Holy Spirit to convict you of your sin. Do not be blinded to your own sin and remain living in the same sinful ways. Confess your sins and ask God for forgiveness now.

PSALM 50 19 FEBRUARY 2008

True worship brings obedience

“He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God.” Psalm 50:23

Psalm 50 is the first 12 Psalms (Psalms 73-83) by Asaph. Asaph’s family became one of the 3 families given responsibilities for music and song in the temple - 1 Chr.25:1-9

This Psalm is also a Psalm of instruction, not of prayer and praise. It tells of the coming of Christ and the day of judgement, in which God will call men to account for their lives. In Ps 50, God deals with those who were religious in practice and yet neglected godliness. Their heart is not set on worship and godliness. It was the duty of the people to bring the sacrifice; but God is not pleased with the outward sacrifice they bring. Nothing pleases him where it is done religiously as an act. True worship comes from the heart. The judgment of God is being mentioned in this chapter, where he will judge according to our heart more than the act. His rebuke and correction to the wicked is in verse 16-23.

Obedience is better than sacrifice. God desires obedience from your heart more than what you can offer to Him.

Application:
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you examine your heart now. Are you in religious worship or in true worship with obedience? Ask God to forgive you for your sins and ask Him to help you stop sinning.

Temporal Riches Vs Eternal Riches

“A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish” Psalm 49:20

Psalm 49 carries a word of instruction concerning the vanity of the world.

Wealth cannot buy security and happiness. Nor can wealth save yourself and others from death. Nothing perishable, such as silver or gold can ever redeem you. But with the precious blood of Christ without blemish that you are redeemed, 1 Pet 1:18-19. No amount of wealth can buy life.

Therefore the rich should not take their delight in their wealth. And the poor should not be oppressed by the rich and become fearful of life. Do not trust your life to your wealth, verse 6.

Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Do not place your security in wealth, and let this be a motive for living. Instead, put your faith and trust in the Lord.

Application:
Take some time to meditate on Ps 49. Ask God to reveal to you if your love for money has become your zeal in life?
If its’ yes, repent today and ask God to re-direct your course.
If you have not been tithing regularly, do it now.

God Is Our God Forever

“For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. Psalm 48:14

Psalm 48 tells us that God can protect Zion, a city in Jerusalem. Verse 1-3 of Psalm 48 talks about the beauty of Mount Zion. God is the fortress for Zion. He is the defence for Zion. God protects Zion.

Verse 4-7 records for us the futile attacks of the nations. The enemy fled in terror (vs5) when they saw that the great King was in Zion. God is Zion and the people’s security – verse 8. From verse 9-11, the people were able to worship and praise God with gladness because of God’s mighty saving acts.

Because of God’s unfailing love, he will protect His city and His people. He will be our defence when there are attackers. He is our refuge and fortress. He is our strength. God is the everlasting God and His promises to His people will stay.

Application:
God comes to our defence because He loves us. Recall a time where God delivered you from an impossible situation. Praise God for His deliverance. May gratitude fill your heart with thanksgiving.
Take a few minutes to praise God for His unfailing love. Give thanks to Him for great is the Lord and He is most worthy of your praise. God Loves you and His love is unchanging. Receive His great love for you now. Ask God to touch you and fill you with His love today!

God reigns over the nations; God is seated on
his holy throne. Psalm 47:8

The Lord reigns over all the earth. Nations are called to rejoice in God. We are called to praise the Lord. Let’s celebrate the King.

God is worthy of all praises. He is an awesome and a great King. Victory has been won on Calvary. Jesus has triumph over death.
At the name of Jesus, every knee must bow and every tongue confesses that Christ is Lord. Phil 2:10-11

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again rejoice - Phil 4:4

Application:
Take a moment now to rejoice in the Lord.
Sing praise unto Him for He is worthy.
He has triumph over death and victory had been won. Declare God’s victory through His son Jesus now.
Throw away all the feelings of defeat. You can have victory in the Lord.
Allow God to take charge of everything. Come before Him and invite Him to take control for He is the God of power and authority.

God Is Our Refuge And Strength

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Psalm 46 is a song of hope. Psalm 46:1-5 encourages us to take comfort in God when things seem gloomy. Glory is given to God both as king of the nations as well as king of His people in Psalm 46:6-11.

When in distress, God is our help. We can triumph through distressing and fearful moments when He is with us. God is our present help in times of trouble – Ps 46:1.
His presence with us brings us to triumph over darkness moment of life.
To triumph over the greatest dangers faced, God is our strength and our help. His strength is sufficient for us. Therefore do not be afraid. God will help you out of your troubles.

The sovereign Lord is with us. He will never leave us. His is a God of power against all enemies. He protects the nations and His people.

Application:
Have you ever become fearful because everything seem to be falling apart?
Take heart that God is your refuge and strength, your ever-present help when in trouble.
Release all your fears and anxiety to God. Take time to be still before God and acknowledge Him as the God of power and authority over these circumstances.
No problems and difficulties are too big for God.

PSALM 45 14 FEBRUARY 2008

The Marriage of The Lamb - Rev 19:7

“They are led in with joy and gladness; they enter the palace of the king.” Psalm 40:15

This is a celebration of a wedding. It is a joyful occasion. A wedding with great splendour and glory.
The kingdom of heaven is being compared to a royal nuptial.

The psalmist in verses 3-9, was admiring & praising the Bridegroom, who is Christ the King. Message to the bride, that is the church, is found in verse 10 – 15. In particular, the glory of the bride was being mentioned in verse 13-15.

It is a wedding between Christ and His Bride – the Church. A wedding is not without a close intimate relationship between the groom and the bride.
The bride would want to present herself pure and beautiful to her bridegroom.

The wedding of the lamb expresses the intimate relationship between God and His people. You are God’s people. You are the bride of Christ! Do you have a close intimate relationship with Christ the bridegroom? Are you ready to receive the bridegroom?

Application:
Today, decide in your heart that you want to enter into intimacy with Christ the groom. It’s going to be a relationship that will bring joy and honour.
Is there any sin that prevents you from drawing near to the Christ the King? Repent and receive God’s cleansing. Welcome the King of Glory!

PSALM 44 13 FEBRUARY 2008

A Cry for National Deliverance

“Rise up and help us; redeem us because of
your unfailing love.” Psalm 44:26

This Psalm is about Israel’s cries for help after suffering a devastating defeat.

Ps 44:1-8 Tell us the great things God has done for them, praising God for past victories.
Ps 44:9-16 Complained of the present state of defeat and its consequences – being put to shame before their enemies.
Ps 44:17-22 They plead of their innocence to God that they have not sin and yet calamity had befall upon them.
Ps 44:23-26 Finally, the psalmist appeals to God for deliverance in prayers.

Past experiences of God's power and goodness will add strength to our faith. The many victories Israel had obtained, were not by their own strength or merit, but by God's favour and grace. We can trust in Him

Application:
In times of hardship, difficulties and even sufferings, we should not blame God. Nor should we turn to worldly and sinful ways of dealing with matters. Instead, we should turn to God and cry out to Him for mercy. We can pray in faith to God to redeem us because His love is unfailing.
Now, boldly declare that in God you will Trust.
Boldly declare that it is in God that you trust. Give thanks for his unfailing love.

PSALM 43 12 FEBRUARY 2008

Prayer of Deliverance & Restoration

“Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God. Psalm 43:4

Psalm 42 & 43 form a single prayer. Thus, we should look at Psalm 43 as a continuation of Psalm 42.
The Psalmist in chapter 42 was not able to go to the temple to worship God. He was depressed and outcast.

In Psalm 43, the psalmist decided that it did not matter if he could go to the temple as God was with him everywhere he went. He turns to God for strength as he acknowledges God is his stronghold in
Ps 43:2.

In this chapter, the psalmist prays to God to delivery him from his captivity. And he will go to the altar to get as near to God as he could and be in His presence. His confidence and joy is in the Lord.

There might be circumstances where you have yet to see victory, do not give up. Let God be your stronghold and He is your sufficient strength. God will restore you to strength and intimacy in Him.
Our hope is in the Lord and we can praise him, our saviour and our God. Ps 43:5

Application:
Heavenly Father, forgive me when I fail. Keep me and guide me when I go through difficulties. Help me to focus my heart on You. Teach me to praise You and exalt Your Holy Name like the psalmist does. I can place my hope in you for You are my Savior and my God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PSALM 42 11 FEBRUARY 2008

Prayer of Deliverance & Restoration

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42: 5, 11

There are 11 Psalms that are by “The Sons of Korah” (Ps 42; 44-49; 84-85).
“Sons of Korah” refers to the Levitical choir/musicians, serving in the Tabernacle Worship, made up of the descendants of Korah. (1 chr.6:31-37)

The psalmist is depressed because he is unable to go to the temple to worship God. He could have been driven out of the land of Israel, maybe even taken captive by the enemy. He weeps as he longs for the presence of God Ps 40:3.
He remembered the days of joy when in intimacy with God. He was able to "go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God." Ps 42:4.

Now, his soul is "downcast" and "disturbed" (Ps 42:5). He is in a state of "mourning" and "oppression" (Ps 42:9) and "suffering" (Ps 42:10). Yet in his downcast state, he places his hope and trust in God the Rock. He holds his faith in the living God and places confidence in God’s promises. (Ps 42:5,8 ,11).

Application:
Are there moments where you feel “blues” and are depressed? Turn to God and place your hope in Him. Trust him the way the Psalmist did by declaring your hope in God. Praise Him at all circumstances. Take a moment to praise God for who He is now!

PSALM 41 10 FEBRUARY 2008

God’s Forgiveness Brings Deliverance

“In my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever.” Psalm 41:12

This psalm concludes a collection of 4 psalms, Psalms 38-41. It also brings an end to Book 1 with a doxology - a declaration of praise to God, verse 13.
David is seriously ill and he acknowledges that his illness is a result of sin, Psalm 41:4. He had committed adultery and had plotted against Uriah’s death, (2 Samuel 11:6-17). In addition to his illness, David had also experienced betrayal by his close friend. Ps 41:9.
David prays with confidence that the Lord will restore him in Ps 41:1-3, 11-12. David is certain of God’s restoration and blessings because he recognised his sin before God. In 2 Samuel 12:13, David confesses and repentance of his sin. It is because of his confession and repentance before God that David receives God’s forgiveness of Sin and his Joy in the Lord is being restored.
Application:
Pray and ask God to reveal your sins to you now. True deliverance comes with the forgiveness of God. Recognise and acknowledge your sins the way David does.
When you confess and repent before God, He is sure to forgive you and to grant to you deliverance. You will be healed and your soul will be restored. Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.

PSALM 40 9 FEBRUARY 2008

The God of Deliverance

“Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.” Psalm 40:5

Psalm 40 is a prayer for help in troubled times. David is overwhelmed by his distress which could be caused by sin. Psalm 40:4, “O Lord, have mercy on me; heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
It is sin that brought David to slimy pit, mud and mire. But God is able to deliver. David’s prayer in this chapter begins with him praising God for his mercies in the past. Psalm 40:1-5. David is confident of God’s deliverance.
As David recounted God’s favour to him, in delivering him out of deep distress & trouble, he committed himself to do the father’s will. True worship is found in our obedience to God.
Thus, when David faces present troubles and is overwhelmed by it (Psalm 40:11-17), he is able to turn to God for help & deliverance because his confidence is in the certainty of God’s deliverance.
Application:
Ask God to remind you of a time where He brought you out of your pit of despair. Pray to the Holy Spirit to speak to you now. Give thanks to God & declare His goodness, He will deliver you. If you have drifted from God because of Sin or difficulties you face, God is able to draw you back to Himself.

PSALM 39 8 FEBRUARY 2008

In The Frailty and Vanity of Life, We Place Our Hope in The Lord.

“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.” Psalm 39:7

Psalm 39 is a prayer of a soul that is deeply troubled. David, facing sickness and sorrow is burdened with negative thoughts.
David had to remind himself of his covenants with God to watch his ways and keep his tongue from sin. Although David kept his tongue, he could not suppress the anguish within. Psalm 39:1-3.
Eventually, he spoke in prayers to God to help him understand the shortness and uncertainty of life in Psalm 39:4-6.
After lamenting on the shortness and uncertainty of life, and the frailty and vanity of life, in Verses 7-13, David turned his eyes and heart towards Heaven where hope can only be found in God.

Application:
Are you burdened with unbelieving thoughts? Unbelieving thoughts bring disappointment and despair.
When situations are bad or trying, do not make it worse by speak negatively. Keep your mouth silent from negative words. Turn to God to confess your hope and your trust in Him.
What are the difficult and trying situations you could be facing now? Speak God’s hope and goodness into these situations now.

PSALM 38 7 FEBRUARY 2008

Pain, Loneliness & Cry to the Lord

David was very ill & in great pain as a result of his sin of adultery and murder. “My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly. I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning. My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart... My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes.” Psalm 38:5-8.

Besides physical pain, in a time where he was most vulnerable, his friends and companions avoided him v11 while his enemies actively planned his ruin v12.

At his low point, David prayed, “I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God.” Psalm 38:15

David also confessed his struggles (people gloating v16, worsening physical condition v17, numerous enemies who hate him, men who repaid his good with evil v19-20) and his own sin & how it troubled him v18.

David was in a crisis, many areas in his life was falling apart. Are you struggling like David where you felt that something is breaking up, your relationship, family or perhaps it’s a friend that you know that feels this way. Follow David & pray, “O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.” Psalm 38:21-22

Does the Wicked Really Prosper?

The wicked do prosper for a short while but their prosperity is short lived: die away v2, will be no more v10, perish... vanish like smoke v20, passed away and was no more.. couldn’t be found v36.

During the time we see the wicked prosper or getting away with injustice, God guides us to guard our hearts from sin. We are to:

- Refrain from fretting, v1, 7, 8
- Not to envy, v1
- Delight in God, v4
- Commit your way to God, v5
- Be still before God, v7
- Wait patiently for God, v7
- Refrain from anger & turn away from wrath, v8
God’s promise of blessing is tremendous for those who decide to guard our hearts from sin. You stand to receive a rich inheritance from the Lord! Decide to walk right before God today, don’t get uptight if some really nasty classmate or colleague get better grades or promotions and you did not. Trust that God will bless you too as you walk right with Him.

PSALM 36 5 FEBRUARY 2008

A Reflection

David had encountered much sin and evil in his life – as a victim & also when he fell into sin. He also encountered much of God’s love and righteousness in all his trials as well. This psalm is a reflection of both areas.

In the first part, “Transgressions speak to the ungodly within his heart” Psalm 36:1 (NASB). It was as if sin (evil) were talking to the sinner – deceiving and flattering the sinner, v2-3. The sinner is drawn into wicked deeds and active sinning. Even on his bed he plots evil; he commits himself to a sinful course and does not reject what is wrong. Psalm 36:4

In the second part, David describes God’s love & righteousness. “Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.“ Psalm 36:5-7

David concluded this psalm with a prayer, v10-12, asking God to continue His love to the Godly & protection from the ungodly.

Let’s do our own reflection on these 2 areas as well. What do you feed your mind with: Negative thoughts (are deceptions or pride) or God’s love & righteousness? Ask God to continue His love & righteousness in your life!

The Lord Fights for You

David is in the heat of things again. Saul and his men, some previously David’s friends, v14 were trying to kill David. The onslaught seemed intense: people after his life v3-4, traps set for him v7, hostile accusers v11 and so on. None of us would want to be in those shoes. But if it does happens, take heart, God fights for His people Exodus 14:14.

Perhaps it’s in knowing this that David prayed this prayer: “Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." Psalm 35:1-3

Whatever your battles may be, God will step in to help you!

Supernatural Escape

David was caught by Achish, a Philistine King (also known as Abimelech, the official title of Philistine kings, just as Egyptian kings were known as Pharaoh). In a clever stroke of disguise, David pretended to be a mad man and Achish set the mad man free. David escaped from the very clutches of the enemy and this psalm was penned, (see 1 Samuel 21:10-15)

The first thought of David when God got him out of danger was praise and thanksgiving, v1-3. Then David wrote down the secret for his escape (by Warren Wiersbe ‘Be Worshipful’:

(i) Seek God, He rescues you v4-8
(ii) Fear God, he blesses you, v9-10,12-14
(iii) Trust God, He delivers you, v19-22

These 3 aspects perhaps summed up well the description of David as ‘a man after God’s own heart’. There are many things that we can be going after – grades, friends, wealth, position, approval and so on. But if choose and decide to put God first, we will find ourselves living a supernatural life. If you are for the Lord, He will be for you too!

Praise & Worship God

This psalm was likely written after Israel was victorious over their enemies or a trial, v10-11, 16-17. Obviously, God was the reason for their victory and hence the leader taught the people (i) how to worship, v1-3 (ii) why worship, v4-19 and (iii) the effect of worship, v20-22

(i) How to worship: “Sing joyfully to the LORD... Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.” Psalm 33:1-3

(ii) Why worship: He is true to His word, faithful v4, His love is unfailing v5, He is the Maker of the Universe v6, He holds up the world v7, He establishes His plans forever v9-11, He is your God v12, He delivers you v13-19

(iii) Effect of worship: Renewed hope in God. “We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.” Psalm 33:20-22

What is your struggle each time we come together to praise & worship God? Do you find yourself singing joyfully? Look through all the reasons we worship God for. Clean Up God’s Way

The easy way of clearing up a messy room is to quickly open up a cabinet and stuff everything into it. The room looked clean up since everything was hidden. Some of us treat sin, this way too. We put it behind us, deny its existence and give the whole world the ‘i’m fine, thank you’ face.

King David used this housekeeping strategy when he sinned. Because sin is an active poison, his life started ebbing away during the period he had hidden away his sin. “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah” Psalm 32:3-4. Then David confessed his sin and he was restored.

When we confess our sins, God cleans it all off with the blood of Jesus, no record of the sin could ever be found again. “Count yourself lucky, how happy you must be – you get a fresh start, your slate’s wiped clean.” Psalm 32:1 (Msg)

Come clean before God today. He promised to do the thorough job of cleaning up the mess, with forgiveness, v5, protection & help, v7, guidance & counsel with a loving eye on you, v8.

Men’s Plots & God’s Secret Hidout

The bad guys had secret plots & conspiracies against David, v4 & it really hurt him. Emotionally, he was anguished, v7, sorrow, grief v9. Physically, his body weakened, v10. Spiritually, he was rejected, v11b (people avoided him), forgotten, treated as if dead, v12a and murder plots, v13b.

The descriptions given in this psalm best fit the period of subversive campaign by Absalom to usurp the throne. Absalom, known for his persuasive words, was able to win even Ahithophel, David’s key man, v13 (2 Samuel 15-18)

When David called on God, He encountered God’s abundant goodness. “How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you.” Psalm 31:19 Besides that, God also has a secret place where He hid David away from his enemies. “In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues.” Psalm 31:20

Are there any odds stacked against you or matters that wound you emotionally, physically or spiritually? Ask the Lord to help you out of your troubles. You will find His blessings & protection away from harm.

Mourning into Dancing

This psalm was likely written in the time where David acted presumptuously. A plague struck and claimed 70,000 lives (see 1 Chronicles21:16 & 2 Samuel 24). These events led to David falling ill, till the point of death, v3, 9, weeping, v5, God’s withdrawal of His Presence, v7. The turning point came when David cried out to God for help, v2 and from that point on, he was healed, raised up from near death, his mourning was turned into dancing and his favour with God was restored.

How gracious and generous is the forgiveness of our heavenly Father. The moment we repent, He transforms all that brought pain and shame into our lives.

Some of us may have sinned presumptuously too. For those of us who are serving, we can end up running on our experience rather than inquiring of the Lord. For the rest of us, if we do not have the habit of asking God for guidance in making decisions, let’s learn to do that. Sometimes the lack of consulting Him leads us up paths of frustration. God desires that you have more joy, v11-12, so seek Him about what you intend to do & even whether some thoughts you think, pleases Him or not. May He transform us all as we learn to seek Him.

A Display of God’s Glory

Psalm 19:1 “The heavens are telling of the glory of God” and indeed so, Psalm 29 fully shows us God’s glory and awesomeness in the description of a storm that David observed. This observation draws us to appreciate the power & strength of God & worship Him, v1-2.

The path of the storm is described from v3-8, starting somewhere over the Mediterranean Sea. Then it moved Eastward towards the mountains of Lebanon; great Cedars fall & the mountains looked as though it was skipping like calves. Then the storm moved towards Sirion and Southward towards the wilderness of Kadesh where it tapered off.

The might of the storm is shown in the way everything got rattled in its path, deserts were shaken, the oak trees were twisted and forests were laid bare.

This psalm ends off with the promise, “The LORD is enthroned as King forever. The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.” Psalm 29:10b-11.

Whatever situations that you feel inadequate in, be assured that God is King & grants you His strength & His blessing of peace.

Knocking on the Doors of Heaven

David knew Who to turn to, Whose ears he wanted. “To you I call, O LORD my Rock; do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who have gone down to the pit. Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.” Psalm 28:1-2

The reason for the persistent banging on heaven’s doors was that David was being grouped together with the wicked. “Do not drag me away with the wicked, with those who do evil, who speak cordially with their neighbors but harbor malice in their hearts. Repay them for their deeds and for their evil work; repay them for what their hands have done and bring back upon them what they deserve.” Psalm 28:3-4

The door opens, David senses God’s Presence and is assured of forgiveness. “Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.” Psalm 28:6-7

Just as in our friendships, if there was any misunderstanding with someone close, would you be eager to set it straight? God is holy. If there was a hint of barrier in your walk with Him, would you go knocking on His doors to confess & seek forgiveness?

Strengthened by Hunger

Unpleasant things are happening in David’s life. Yet, what was amazing was David stood confident in God. “The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life-- of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.” Psalm 27:1-3

David’s strength came from his hunger for God’s Presence. “One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple... Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of you, "Seek his face!" Your face, LORD, I will seek. Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, O God my Savior.” Psalm 27:4, 7-9

David closes the psalm with “I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27:13-14

Hunger for the LORD today and He will strengthen you with a new confidence in Him in your circumstances.

PSALM 26 26 JANUARY 2008
By David – Psalms 26, 27 & 28 speaks of the longing David had for God’s dwelling place. In Psalm 26, he feared that God would reject him as he too, was a sinner. In Psalm 27, he hungered for God, the source of His strength. In Psalm 28, David knocks on the door of heaven with his supplication.

Longing to be in God’s House

David seemed to be facing some major indictment – his integrity was being questioned & there was public opinion that he was like the rest of the sinners, men of bloodshed, wicked schemes & bribes. Hence the appeal, “Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth.” Psalm 26:1-3

God’s examination of his heart was important for David wanted very much to be in the house of the Lord. “I love the house where you live, O LORD, the place where your glory dwells.” Psalm 26:8

Perhaps there was some truth in it, for he had committed adultery & scheme Uriah’s murder. Hence, he prayed, “Do not take away my soul along with sinners, my life with bloodthirsty men, in whose hands are wicked schemes, whose right hands are full of bribes.” Psalm 26:9-10

Would being excluded from God’s Presence cause you to anxious? For some of us, we need to examine if we have taken God’s house for granted. Look forward to our Sunday time of worship with a longing like David has for God’s house.

Friend in High Places

King David knew that he has a VVIP for a Friend. With God on his side, David outplay, outwit & outlast Saul, Absalom & the kings who came to attack Israel. Truly, nothing is impossible with God.

Then why the concern? - “Do not let me be ashamed” (v2& 20); what’s more, he added on the reminders to God, “O my God, in You I trust” (v2) & “for I take refuge in You” (v20). Was it because of the fact that his enemies were treacherous (v3), or many & hate him (v19) or that they laid traps (v15)?

David knew that God is Holy and if there were any reason that God handed him over, it would be because of sin. David did not presume that he is right before God. Once again, he prayed and confessed his sins:

- Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways v7a

- For the sake of your name, O LORD, forgive my iniquity, though it is great v11

- Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. v18

David has learnt to relate reverently with his VVIP Friend. And in return, he receives his Friend’s guidance (v12), prosperity (v13) and shares his Friend’s secret (v14). For those of us who long for a closer & more intimate walk with God, step one is to approach Him reverently. Yes, be confident that He loves you but also humble yourself & confess your sins.

Jesus – The Returning King

This psalm was likely sung at the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:11-19). Just as the people rejoice & welcome the return of the Ark to the Tabernacle, on the day where Jesus returns, we would also sound our cheers for His coming.

This psalm would have been read in a participatory manner: a leader would ask the questions in v 3, 8a & 10a and the people or Levites would reply with 4-7, 8b-9 and 10b respectively. The people seem to know full well their part in being ready for His return – “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.” Ps 24:4

Indeed, everything on this planet including our very life, belongs to God. Our role then, is to be a good steward of all that belongs to Him including the very lives that we live. While Jesus is our Shepherd & cares for us, do we take care too, the way we order our lives?

Some of us, when we open ourselves to negative & dark thoughts, we agree with the evil one on all the things that cannot be done. In that manner, we lift our soul to what is false when we buy into lies & deception easily. Is there any negative thought about yourself that you need to get rid of & let the King of Glory come into to shine in your hearts? Let the Holy Spirit renew us today.

If you are feeling lonely or rejected, know that He is Jehovah Shammah, He is always there for you, “Never will I leave you, Never will I forsake you.” Hebrew 13:5b. If you know that your examination results would be coming out soon or you are confused about what choices of courses to make, He is Jehovah Shalom, your peace.

By David – Psalm 22, 23 & 24 are all about the Messiah, our Lord Jesus Christ. Ps 22 is about the Messiah Who laid down his life, Ps 23 is about the Messiah Who Shepherds & cares, Ps 24 is about the Messiah who returns as King.

Jesus – Crucifixion & Resurrection

David saw prophetically the crucifixion of our Lord. There was no familiar experience that he could have possibly drawn from, for Israel did not have crucifixion as a form of capital punishment & the events described by David were 1000 years before they actually took place.

David prophesied that :

1. Jesus was forsaken by God the Father, v1-5 (refer to Mat 27:46; Mk 15:34)

2. Jesus was despised, v6-11 (v7 & Mat 27:39; v7-8 & Mat 27:42,43)

3. Jesus was crucified & the happenings around, v12-21 (the animals in this psalm was symbolic of those who wanted Him dead)
- Pierced hands & feet, v16 & Jn 20:25
- Crowd that gathered, v17 & Lk23;27
- Divided & lots cast for his garments, v18 & Mat27;35

4. Jesus appearance after resurrection, v22-25 & 1 Cor 15:1-8

We now live in the blessings that flowed from the cross – the message of salvation is freely given to all, v26-31. “All the ends of the earth will remember & turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will worship before You.” Psalm 22:27 (NASB)

Let’s pause & pray for unsaved loved ones & our nation to come to the Saviour.

Secret to Victory

If Psalm 20 was the prayer & Psalm 21 was the answer, let’s now take a look at how God answered the nation Israel’s prayer:

PS 20:4 May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
PS 21:2 You have granted him the desire of his heart and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah

Joy in the victory God gave
PS 20:5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious
PS 21:1 O LORD, the king rejoices in your strength. How great is his joy in the victories you give!

God protected David
PS 20:6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand.
PS 21:3-4 You welcomed him with rich blessings and placed a crown of pure gold on his head. He asked you for life, and you gave it to him-- length of days, for ever and ever.

The key to the nation Israel’s success and to greater success in the days ahead (v8-12) is found in this verse, “For the king trusts in the LORD; through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken.” Psalm 21:7

David’s confidence in God was built in his relationship with God. Just like in any human relationships, when we know someone well, we can confidently reflect his or her wishes and be right on target.

Make this your life goal: to know God & grow in confidence in the prayers that you utter before Him.

Prayer Before Battle

Psalm 20 & Psalm 21 are prayers made as a nation before the battle and after the victory, respectively.

All of us face some form of battles in our daily life. Some are really huge ones: prolonged illness of a loved one, big debt to repay, a major deal to close or perhaps this is the ‘O’ level or ‘A’ level year. Yet other battles are smaller stuff, a geography test, an urgent need for a taxi to get you to an important meeting.

God is on your side & He wants you to do well, “May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests.’ Psalm 20:3-5 Hence the psalmist could confess “Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the LORD our God.” Psalm 20:7 (NASB)

Yes, we need to put in our share of the effort to study for the test, to familiarise yourself with the arguments to persuade clients and so on.

But today, we can make a bold confession that God will help me in __________ battle I face today. Commit your battle to the LORD today. He can be trusted.

God Wants You to Hear Him!

The Bible tells us that God makes Himself known to us in 3 ways:

1. Through nature, v1-6
2. Through the Word, v7-8
3. Through the Holy Spirit, v9-13

For the group that has been faithfully reading a psalm a day, you would probably have learnt how to hear God through 2 & 3. God isn’t just verbal in His expression, nor is His interest solely on moral issues. He is also quite an Artist. David has discovered & been enriched by that part of God as he spent a good part of his life outdoors – as a shepherd boy in his youth and later on, as a fugitive on the run. Colours & the various forms of creation that he saw, drew him to His Maker.

Today, we have similar media that captures our attention & time: television, movies, magazines, internet & all sorts of computer games. Yet, these forms never quite leave you refreshed on the inside. Prolonged watching of television or the playing of computer games leaves us feeling tired.

Why not take a step outdoors today, look into the heavens, marvel at the stars, the clouds, the trees, the flowers and the little animals that come by. They all belong to God, Maker of the Universe and the one Who made you and me. When we stand in the midst of His handiwork, it draws us to both His greatness & love. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

The Story of David’s Adventures

This psalm of praise was shared to the nation of Israel after God gave victory to them over the attacking nations. It reflects David’s journey of walking with God in all the battlefield & running away episodes of his life.

Hence, it’s no wonder David opens the psalm with a declaration of love for the LORD & a dependence on Him! “I love you, O LORD, my strength.” Psalm 18:1

And he truly meant it. He knows how narrow some of the misses were & some of the miraculous deliverances, “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. Psalm 18:16-19

As you meditate on David’s tribute to God in the short paragraph above, you would observe that he not only describes what happened, but David also tells of the wonderful love God has for him, that God was delighted in him.

What’s your testimony of your walk with God like? Perhaps there was something that the Lord did for you recently. Would you now re-look it & learn to acknowledge His love & His delight in you? As we affirm God’s love, we allow God to make us more secure in His love & delight.

Please... Please... Help Me

David sounded pretty desperate here. Throughout the whole psalm, he seemed to be appealing to God to step in and intervene. The heat got so strong that it seemed like the enemy was close at hand, “They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a great lion crouching in cover. Psalm 17:11-12

Have you prayed intensely before? These were David’s lines of intense praying –

- Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea;
- listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer, v 1
- ‘I’m innocent / clean’ v3-5
- I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; v6a
- Give ear to me and hear my prayer, v6b
- Show the wonder of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you, v7

What Possesses You?

Marilyn Hickey puts it aptly in her comment for this psalm, “The man who possesses God, and is possessed by God, has true joy.”

For some of us, our possessions are our achievements – academic, sports or finances, or loved ones – family and special friends. We recognise that these are all blessings from God for our lives and are thankful. Then there are the moments that as we interact so much with the blessings that God gave, that we start to get forgetful and somehow credit ourselves that we deserve what we have and where we are today. And that’s when the grip on life’s blessings tighten & we get possessed by our possessions rather than the Giver of life. A sure test on where your heart lies would be when something precious is taken away. Would you still be happy in the Lord or would you feel that God has violated your rights?

David’s joy and faith is unshakable because God possesses His heart so fully “I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8 David felt really blessed because the LORD is his inheritance (David possesses God in a sense) “The LORD is the portion of my inheritance” Psalm 16:5a (NASB) and God fully takes care of him v10-11 (God possesses David).

Does Jesus captures your heart fully today or are there blessings that God gave, that now mean more than Him? Renew your heart before God today.

Who May Stay With You?

No wonder God likes David. He asks a question that reflects a longing for the Person & Friendship of God, rather than the comforts that come off the Hands of God. This psalm was written after David’s 2nd attempt to bring the Ark back to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6). In the 1st attempt, Uzzah was careless and he was struck dead.

Thankfully, because of the blood of Jesus over our lives, we now have free access into God’s Presence.

This psalm (Message version) lists 9 traits of those who will always be welcomed to God’s house. Such is a young man / young lady who :

1. Walks straight
2. Acts right
3. Tells the truth
4. Doesn’t hurt his /her friends
5. Doesn’t blame his / her neighbours
6. Despise the despicable
7. Keeps his / her word even if it costs
8. Makes a honest living
9. Never takes a bribe
Check our hearts today – is there anything crooked, hidden or unrighteous? Have we shared truthfully or there is something not fully revealed? Look through the list of 9 traits and allow God to take you deeper in your walk with Him.

We Could All be Fools Too

Psalm 10, 12 & 14 presents a picture of the ungodly, their pride, words and corrupt actions, respectively. When we read such extreme descriptions, we may tend to detach and treat it as general knowledge, not applicable to us, maybe applicable only to non-believers, the really wicked kinds.

But wait, before we are too quick to dismiss this, let’s consider again the word ‘fool’. The word ‘fool’ refers to ‘a brutish person who is like a stubborn animal’ extracted from ‘Be Worshipful’ pg 58 by Warren Wiersbe
While most of us believers are wise enough not to oppose God head-on with blatant unrighteousness, we fail to check if we have allowed our hearts to become stubborn & wilful, living for ourselves rather than fully for the plans of God. Particularly, coming from a knowledge based society, it’s easy to be caught up in the ‘i know better’ and do it MY way kind of living, rather than to seek God, v2. We live out our priorities and to-do list rather than God’s to-do list for our day.

With such an independent way of life, some of us end up being insensitive - neglecting the poor & those in need, “You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.” Psalm 14:6

PSALM 13

Pen Your Own Psalm

From the point where David was anointed as king till the day he finally took the reigned as king, it was a good fifteen years! The large part of the wait was spent running away from the then king, king Saul who was after David’s life.

No wonder there were days that David sounded depressed & asked how long more was the whole ordeal going to last, v1-2 and how long more was God going to remain silent, and allow evil to win, v3-4. He was down and feelings need to be aired. He found a Friend in God to hear his woes.

For some of us, we have our usual buddies that we would hang out together to talk. Sometimes we would walk away feeling better, other moments, we find that we haven’t quite found our peace even through the sharing. Some of us may even have even less healthy ways of coping: play computer games, partying, drinking, self-mutilation, and so on.

Instead of all that, try penning your own psalm today. Start off by writing, “Dear Jesus” and address the letter to Him. You will be amazed that the same dynamics that you observe here, seeing how David started off with a lot of negative talk (v 1) and ending off sounding positive and hopeful (v 6), apply to your letter as well!

Somehow, when we enter His Presence, His Hands have a way to sooth & comfort every hurt, anxiety or frustration & bring new perspective and strength for our day.

PSALM 12

Cleanse My Lips

David was exasperated as he found it difficult to trust the people around him. Whether he was king-designate, or already king or king-on-the-run, his status attracted a lot of treacherous talk.

Yet, because of his constant conversations with God, inquiring of Him, his relational senses were sharpened so much so that he could detect a fake hanging around him. Such relationships were altogether unsatisfying and if left unchecked, a whole generation would be in trouble for a lack of integrity. This prompted the prayer by David, “Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception.” Psalm 12:1-2

Let’s check our hearts today. Am i guilty of lies and flattery (or as the teens would say, ‘sucking up’)? Repent today if you have unclean lips, see Isaiah 6:5-7. You can’t go very far in building trust if your words are insincere & full of lies.

Let’s learn from the LORD today, “The words of the LORD are pure words; as silver tried in furnace on the earth, refined seven times.” Psalm 12:6 (NASB) Let the words that come forth from our lips go through the scrutiny of the LORD, before you speak it, pause and check your heart. And as you check (pause) your spirit, you allow the Holy Spirit’s purifying fire to remove every insincerity and deception. What comes forth will then build lives & relationships.

PSALM 11

The Harder Choice

Danger looms ahead. Should David abandon his post or stay put and trust in God’s protection? There were several periods that David’s life was in danger, be it while he was serving in Saul’s court, during the times where nations attacked Israel or during his son, Absalom’s uprising. In this instance, he was advised to flee but his convictions told him, ‘Stay’.

David’s decision to hang on in there, not only led him to experience God’s protection, v 4 – 6, this step also drew him closer to God, “For the LORD is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will behold His face.” Psalm 11:7 (NASB)

Most of us like to take the easier road when faced with a choice. David was courageous enough to hear God and obey Him to take the harder path. Not only was he blessed with the Lord’s protection, He grew to know God more.

Whatever may be ahead of you today, let God have the freedom to even ask you to do a harder task rather than to take the easy way out. The greatest blessing of beholding His face awaits those who obey & pay the price of walking the narrow way.

PSALM 10

When God seemed Silent...

Evil seemed to have a field day.

This psalm wrestles with the all time favourite question, “Why does God allow the wicked to prosper?” It seemed like God has hidden Himself and all the bullies are succeeding in their horrid plots. “Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises... He says to himself, ‘God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees.’ ” Psalm 10:1-2,11

Wrong. David asserts, “But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.” Psalm 10:14

A key prayer in this psalm is Psalm 10:12 “Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.”

One plausible explanation for the apparent ‘unseeing’ ways of God is that He wants us to rouse Him to action on behalf of the poor & needy. He already knows what were the wrongs and could have acted on His own. But He wanted His children to share the same, strong concern He has for those who are suffering.

Is there someone you know of, going through a rough patch? Pray Psalm 10:12 and rouse the LORD to action on his / her behalf.

PSALM 9

The Victory of The LORD

We usually have the tendency to use our own strength rather than rely on God. In this psalm, David saw God’s miraculous victories at 2 levels:

- National level: Victory over enemy nations, v3-6, 15-17, 19-20

- Personal level: Victory over struggles (afflictions), v9-14, 18

David knew his limitations in those areas and apart from the intervention of God, he would not have been victorious. Hence, David offered praise to God with ALL his heart (v1). Sincere praise could never be offered in a half-hearted fashion. What’s half-hearted, isn’t praise.

“Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:10

Is there a minor personal matter or a more major concern that you need the Lord to step in and rescue you? Pray Psalm 9:10
When God has come through for you, do remember that when you praise Him, let it be from all of your heart!

PSALM 8

Someone’s Thinking of You!

Do you know how special you are? There are many wonderful works of God’s Hands in Creation – the heavens, the moon and the stars. Yet, mankind ie you and me are the nearest and dearest to Him.

We get special treatment:

- He thinks about you, v4a

- He cares for you, v4b

- He made you in His image, a little lower than Himself, v5a

- He crowns you with glory & majesty, v5b

- He made you to rule over all other Creation (land animals, fishes, birds)

God thinks of you. How often do you think about how He is feeling?

If God is truly special to you, worship Him by doing something sweet for Him today. It could be a simple breakaway from your usual routine to spend more time reading the Word or just being still before Him, or you could choose to fast lunch and turn the hour over to take a walk down the streets, or take a pause at the start of every hour to say a prayer of appreciation of His Presence? Happy thinking more of the Lord today!

PSALM 7

Politics

Cush was out to get David. By speaking ill & lies of David, he was scoring points with the then King Saul and widening the rift between David & Saul. Does that sound familiar, the office or school politics?

David was hence in hot soup, “God! God! I am running to You for dear life; the chase is wild. If they catch me, I’m finished.” Psalm 7:1 (Msg) He submitted his innocence to God, the Supreme Judge of the Universe, “God, if i’ve done what they say – betrayed my friends, ripped off my enemies – If my hands are really that dirty, let them get me, walk all over me, leave me flat on my face in the dirt.” Psalm 7:3-5 (Msg)

David knew that God knows it all and would straighten up the mess that he is in. God is righteous and would establish his innocence, “Wake up, God. My accusers have packed the courtroom, it’s judgement time. Take your place on the bench, reach for your gavel, throw out the false charges against me. I’m ready, confident in your verdict: ‘Innocent’” Psalm 7:7-8 (Msg) And if there was evil committed against the innocent, the scheme would backfire on the schemer, “He who digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit he has made. The trouble he causes recoils on himself; his violence comes down on his own head.” Psalm 7:15-16

Seek the righteous Judge to unravel every entanglement in the relationship struggles and be amazed by how well He sets everything in order!

PSALM 6

An Evening Prayer – At an All Time Low

David was feeling really low for a period of time, “I am weary with my sighing; Every night I make my bed swim, I dissolve my couch with my tears.” Psalm 6:6 (NASB) He sounded depressed & felt like dying.

All of us must have had such moments. What happened here was that David was suffering from so severe an illness, that he could have died, v5. The illness was due to discipline by the LORD.

When such moments hit, we are often tempted to ask God, “How long, O LORD, how long?” Psalm 6:3b Perhaps the ‘how long more?’ question is a wrong one. The right questions to ponder would be, “What can I learn from this trial? Or, how would I have grown after walking this road?”

From David’s reflections here, we see two exemplary attitudes:
- Humility: he made a humble plea to God, v1-4
- Honest with his feelings: he confessed that he
o Felt like dying, v5
o Was sad & distressed, v6
o Cried a lot, v7

This psalm seemed to make David a pathetic sight. Yet, it’s his trust in the LORD, no matter how small that voice, that shines through, “For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD has heard my supplication, The LORD receives my prayer.” Psalm 6:8b-9 (NASB) Truly, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:17 (NASB)

PSALM 5

A Morning Prayer of Dependence on God

As we prepare to step into a new day, let’s recognise that the physical battle before us is really a spiritual battle. David starts his day by doing this, “In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice; In the morning i will order my prayer to You and eagerly watch.” Psalm 5:3 (NASB)

Does God get to hear your voice in the minutes that you are awake? Or is it only in the later part of the day when some problem crops up that you start talking to Him?

David starts his day by praying & eagerly watching for the turnaround in his situation:

- Goodness instead of wickedness, v4

- Repentance instead of sin / pride, v5

- Truth instead of deception, v6

- Peace instead of violence & bloodshed, v6

- Destruction of the wicked, v9-10

- Blessing for those who run to Him for help, v11-12

Some of us have grown accustomed to the typical darkness that lingered in our home or classrooms / offices. Perhaps it’s the cutting words of a teacher / classmate or a boss / colleague. Or it’s an environment that is filled with back-biting or gossip or a general hardness of heart towards our Lord Jesus. Be like David, start in the morning in prayer and watch eagerly for the spiritual climate to change!

PSALM 4

An Evening Prayer To Let Go

Night times, before we fall asleep, are when our guards are lowest. David strengthens his spirit by praying. He prays for his enemies, those who were deceived by his son Absalom (v2), he prays for his friends who shared his burden and could well end up getting angry with Absalom & gang (v4-5) and he acknowledges God’s hand in his day:

- Granting him gladness more than most happy & celebrated moments in life, v7

- Giving him peace so that he can lie down & sleep, v8a

- Providing safety in the whole journey, v8b

A deliberate closing of our day with prayer sure beats the accidental looping of negative thoughts and attitudes in our head. It has been said that our subconscious minds would repeat 6 to 7 times what we had contemplated in the last 30 minutes prior to falling asleep.

Examine your thoughts: are you worried, anxious, pessimistic, or uptight about something? Do not allow yourself to sink lower. Set yourself free today by praying against deception, anger and ask God to grant you gladness, peace & safety.

PSALM 3

By David – Ps 3, 4 & 5 are written by king David when he was on the run. Absalom, his son, rebelled & was hunting him down to kill him. 2 Samuel 15:13-14

Big Trouble Brewing

“God! Look! Enemies past counting! Enemies sprouting like mushrooms, mobs of them all around me, roaring their mockery: ‘Hah! No help for him from God!’” Psalm 3:1-2 (Msg)

While we can see that calamity has befallen king David, he remains worshipful. Three times we see the word ‘Selah’ being used (v2, 4 & 8). Selah could either mean ‘pause or moment of silent meditation’ or ‘lifting up of voices or the lifting up / blowing of trumpets’ or ‘musical interlude’. Selah occurs 71 times in the book of Psalms, so we should start getting used to that.

David directed his thoughts towards God in worship and could see Him strengthening him in the following ways:

- Shield him from harm, v3a
- Restore his dignity, v3b
- Answer his cries, v4b

Therefore, David could...

- Sleep, v5a
- Wake up feeling rested, v5b
- Face his problems without fear, v6

What’s getting to you today? Take time to do a ‘Selah’. God will strengthen you & help you face the issues that are at hand.

PSALM 2

Stay Cool

This psalm illustrates vain human efforts in the light of God’s sovereign plan. “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?” Psalm 2:1 We will witness the biggest revolt against the church & the saints in the end times. God will be rejected in a big way. Yet, He stays cool - “The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, "I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill."” Psalm2:4-6. God’s management style rests simply on His eternal plan of salvation and judgement of the nations.

But it’s not like He’s of a harsh nature nor is He looking forward to slapping on judgement on the rebellious. This psalm ends off with an appeal to submit to the LORD. ”Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” Psalm 2:10-12

As His children, we can also stay cool in the midst of unpleasant circumstances & rest on the good plan that God has for your life! Submit, be patient & trust Him, He sees it all ahead of time & knows best!

The Kind of Person God Likes

Psalm 1:1 (NIV) “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.” In the Message version, Psalm 1 starts off with “How well God must like you – you don’t hang out at Sin Saloon, you don’t slink along Dead-End Road, you don’t go to Smart-Mouth College.”

The person that God likes is one that steers away from the draw of sinners & sin and instead, is drawn to God’s Word – he / she is delighted by the Word! To take delight is to be thrilled – imagine how your eyes suddenly widened, your face beams into a happy smile and your heart feels a nice, fuzzy warmth. Yes, that’s how God wants us to feel when we approach the Word. What we like, we would think more about it, be fascinated and amazed by it: and that’s the very meaning of meditation. Meditation was never meant to be a deliberate, laborious chore, it’s a natural connection to what we are drawn to.

Some of us get hooked on pursuing the next episode of the latest drama serial or Harry Potter books or computer games. These are actually poor substitutes of what would truly delight your soul.

The one that has God’s pleasure & smile is one whose thoughts always gravitate back to Him. He is the Core of all that your life revolves around – studies, boy/gal friend, ministry, career or even petty nonsense. God is your hot pursuit. He is your Hero and never fails to light up your face with a smile of pleasure.

READING THE BOOK OF PSALMS

Life is full of ups & downs. We feel a lot. Knowing that we are made that way, our heavenly Father included in the Bible the Book of Psalms to help us get through the highs & lows of our days. Some of us, our favourite phrase is, ‘Hmph, that’s not fair!’ Or, when faced with hurts & pain, we get emo... you’d start feeling depressed, abandoned & lonely. Another favourite past-time when faced with difficult circumstances or people is to grumble & complain.

Psalms is a book full of prayers by various people. King David leads the pack with authorship for 73 of the 150 psalms. Asaph wrote 12 psalms, the sons of Korah, musicians in the temple wrote 11 psalms, King Solomon wrote 2 psalms, Ethan & Moses wrote 1 psalm each. 50 of the psalms remain anonymous.

What you’d find about reading all these writings is how real these men are! They do not hide their struggles with the superficial, ‘i’m okay’ as we would sometimes do, to appear strong. They walk their struggles with God and grow closer with Him. Isn’t it so true, those that we share more to, in a heart-felt manner, when we sense their acceptance & hear them share back with us their concern & support, these are the ones we draw strength from & become closer to? Our heavenly Father longs for a real & close relationship – He bends His ear to relate with us as a Friend & Father. The men of old, knows full well His status. He is a holy God. Men are struck down if they are irreverent or sinning. Yet, He bothers with us, mere humans. In response to a personal & powerful God, all these men have learnt how to truly appreciate and worship God with their meditations and life.

As a church, we will all be reading a Psalm a day as we enter the Year of Sabbath. After all, Sabbath is about ‘Remembrance & Reliance upon God’. The book of Psalms is divided into 5 books (dates of the daily devotions):

Book 1: Psalm 1 – Psalm 41 (1 Jan – 10 Feb)
Book 2: Psalm 42 – Psalm 72 (11 Feb – 12 Mar)
Book 3: Psalm 73 – Psalm 89 (13 Mar – 29 Mar)
Book 4: Psalm 90 – Psalm 106 (30 Mar – 15 Apr)
Book 5: Psalm 107 – Psalm 150 (16 Apr – 29 May)

We look forward to know God MORE intimately this year. Seek Him, yearn for Him and treasure Him. He loves you deeply! As David, a man after God’s heart says, “My cup overflows.” May His Presence fill your soul as you meditate & read a Psalm a day.
